yeah I hate when people call you an ambulance driver and asume you're the EMT-B. I've rode with many people and the Paramedic drove most of the time. Hello People we are the ones that are going to help you.

Whenever someone calls me an Ambulance Driver I always ask them if they know one of those "Firetruck Drivers" or "Police Car drivers" they quickly correct me and then I educate them on what a paramedic is.

It's up to us to educate people on what we do. Aside from being kinda insulting if people think we'r just"ambulance drivers" they're less likely to call when they need us.I have friends who, before they met me used to think like that & who have driven to hsp. themselves vs, waiting for "ambulance driver",They know better now.

To add another comment, the problem with EMS it is so all over the board, with so many variations, between fulltime, 911, transfers services, a plethora of volunteer services, many different levels, and in some cases (sorry if I offend anyone, some people in EMS just scare the &$#! out of me). We all get grouped in with the good, the bad, and yes the ugly. And quite frankly people throwing the "Medic" word around pretty loosely where they may or may not be an EMT or paramedic. All you can do is take care of your own backyard, be professional, dress like one, and so on.

I could not agree with you more. After 30 years, I finally let it go about 15 years ago, It got to a point that when someone told me new a Paramedic, or even where a "Medic" when you got right down to it, they where a medical attendant at a hospital or first responder for a volunteer fire department. It is I am afraid the job, Hell most medical people have no clue.

Indeed, we are all more than mere ambulance drivers. However, in defense of most society, they have limited input and rely a lot on the news media and movies/TV to form opinions. I've also noticed that lots of people don't even know the fundamental differences between an EMT-B and an EMT-P. What a sad, uneducated society we have. LOL

Here is a great story from my youth in EMS (80's). I was pumping gas into the ambulance and lets just say a very attractive flight attendant was filling up her vehicle as well. So being the dashing young man in uniform, I decided to start up a conversation, So I asked her: "Do you like being a Stewardess?", She looked at me with much disdain in her eyes, and said not so politely, I am a Flight Attendant, not a Stewardess. realizing that all hope had been lost, I simply replied, that's okay, I am just a ambulance driver. I guess there are a few others who have to live down the old names as well.
