Well, today I went on one of hospital clinicals. And wow!!! That was awesome. Come to think about it. I feel bad for some of the student's down near Ft. Hood and having to learn how to deal with all the MCI patients down there. Anyway, I got five assessments done. I need six, but more like a certain kind. For EI, one cardio, one Diabetic, one pedi, one nuero, and two of my choices. So far I got the Cardio, the diabetic, and the pedi. I almost got a nuero, but one of my fellow student's got to her before I did, we aren't allowed to do the same ones. Well Tomorrow's going to be interesting. Wish me Luck!!!

in response to J.J.'s comment on inexperienced paramedics not not putting in time as basics. although there are good medics working that skipped working as basics, in my opinion there is no substitute for basic assessment and treatment learned in the field.
i am currently a basic working in a very high call volume system ( average 10- 15 911 calls in a twelve hour shift ) in DFW. i have been there for 10 mo. and just now feel i'm ready for medic school, in fact i know i am. as a basic, i specialize in airway management, Pt. assessment, drawling up drugs, understanding pharmacology , vitals, knowing everything about the monitor ore vitals.
these are things that medics some times tend to skip/overlook.i'll give a good example. last week we responded to an "assault" at a bar. tuned out there was a full on brawl that took place. two Pts. had tables thrown at their head, one with a Fx rt ankle w/ obvious deformity and no distal pulses. my medic wanted to immediately medicate w/ morphine. as a basic i excell in splinting and immobilizing. i suggested to splint first, and it made all the difference in the world to the Pt. immobilizing the Fx before moving the Pt. and medicating in my opinion is good medicene that onlyexperienced basics would do.
when i receive my Red patch my experiences as a basic will make me VERY GOOD PARAMEDIC.

Ethan,
I was a deputy sheriff in the Travis County area. What would you like to know?

Curious if anyone out there works for Austin-Travis EMS and, if so, how the like the job and the area. Thinking of making the move to Texas and am interested in that area but looking for some first hand accounts.

I am reading a lot of posts where an EMT fresh out of school is already enrolling in Paramedic classes. Whatever happened to putting in some time to master the basics? Not cool. Not good for the profession.

Old School. Nice.

I'm curious, how did the ER react to this? Which artery was it?
